Wake UP!: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

29 May

I wrote a one act play/choreopoem in 2008 titled ‘Another Love Tragedy for 6’. It is about the Jena 6 incident and how 4 random people are affected by it. I won’t give away all the details… because I hope to fully stage it soon. But with the death of Gil Scott Heron and the shootings that are happening in my city, I feel the need to speak on some real issues.

There is some type of tragedy happening where you live too. What can we do? WAKE UP! Let’s think about what we can do. How change we can status quo? Thus the topic today….I am moved to post about changing our mind sets. About Revolution! I want you to read today and just think… think about what is happening… and your part (or lack thereof)…. and what you can do…

Below is a scene that was birthed by my frustration about the Jena 6 issue and at the time of writing this, I was listening to a lot of Gil Scott Heron. Let’s be about addressing issues and become active in finding solutions. It is time to WAKE UP!

Darkness Returns. Four lights up on stage. ALL walk into each light. A Saxophone and a drum are heard lightly in the background.

MAN 1

You all are still looking for it

MAN 2

Yet, it is right is front of you

WOMAN 2

Can’t you see, you him me

We have been talking about the same thing

Over and over again

WOMAN 1

We are not docile

Or ignorant

Or clouded by illusions of grandeur

Or religion

WOMAN 2

We are looking for change

MAN 2

Mother f****** equality

MAN 1

And You are walking

On that road

Of love

And love leads to truth

Then honesty and…

WOMAN 2

….And Revolution!

WOMAN 1

Not talk

Or foolish propaganda

But true revolution

That will change the status quo

MAN 1

The revolution of illusions than are etched

In the minds of all human beings in America

That must be shattered

Before we can truly be free

It will be the revolution that will get the 6 liberated

Not free

For we have tarnished what free is

But liberated enough to know the system will work for them

And Al Sharpton will not be called

Not needed

For Justice will be understood

Because of the Revolution…

MAN 2

Starts right here with us

You don’t need money

To participate

You don’t have to harp on the past

Cuz the revolution lives in our present

WOMAN 1

Our Revolution

Of the system

Of the heart

Will not be seen through what we think

And it damn sure won’t be televised

Because we are starting anew

Darkness leaves… Forever. Light returns everywhere. Still recognizing that the audience is there, the actors move around the stage, freely.

WOMAN 1

Get off the couch and in the streets

For the revolution will not be televised

If it was, it would not be a revolution

But an evolution of illusions

That we have etched in our minds.

MAN 2

Get a gun and shoot it now

Cuz you are not missing a thing

For it will not

Cannot,

And won’t be there.

In that box that you have made a God.

Shift all the anger

To love

Then into the revolution

WOMAN 2

Looking into it’s four corners wont change America

Or make your pockets fatter

But it will be the opposite of the latter

That will inevitably be the demise of you and I

And that is only one reason why

The Revolution cannot be televised

You need bigger push?

Some more explanation you need

Ok, I see

Yet, all I can say is

Read

Not a magazine

Not a sports page

But where they are writing about the 6

And Katrina

The 50’s and 60’s

And the Atlantic Slave trade

If we take this stand now

And research it

Look at it at least

All will be revealed and we shall see

It’s in the writings of Malcolm

And clear in Martin’s dream

Or maybe in the paper

Where America is everything under crazy

That the revolution will not be televised

MAN 1

The revolution will take place where the pain started

Where addicts dwell,

Gossipers thrive,

And where some preachers make hell

So, Let it be clear

The crystal kind

That You and I will never see better years

We will keep shedding tears

Then we will fear

And that fear will be the wipe out of black men and women

Worldwide

Our children will continue this fear

And this will kill our people

People in general

If we, human kind, will not realize

That the Revolution

MAN 2

Of Life

WOMAN 1

Love

WOMAN 2

Liberty

MAN 1

And whatever else you need to be revolutionized

EVERYONE

Will not be televised

XOXO

Love Hard. Live Harder.

I like that. Reminds me of when I was telling Alecia how people think they are free. When really their idea of ‘freedom’ is freely choosing what to be a slave to.
